Date: Sunday 23rd September
Location: Crooked
Weather: Warm and Sunny
Grade: 2
Group Members: Myself, Tui, Gretchen, Luke, Watson
Accidents/Incidents: None

Awesome, cruisy day down the crooked. Played in all the waves and caught as many eddies as we could to get the most out of the day. The flow was pretty low so we decided not to walk up to the grade 3 put in but still not a bad flow to play in waves etc. As Luke ran the shuttle we stayed in the river practising back deck and rodeo rolls. Didn't quite manage to nail it but it's my goal to try get one.

Nice day for a walk up the Arahura. Big crew but we managed that by splitting into two groups so we wern't so clustered. Martijn and Jake went up further to run Cespit. We met them at the grade 3 put in and headed down. Not too far into it Eckies had a swim but no problems cleaning that up. Headed on down catching heaps of eddies and trying to milk it. Sweeet day!

Sweet trip down the Arnold to give my sister her first experience of rafting. Weather wasn't too great. had to wait for a while in the morning to leave as it was thunder and lightening. Headed there after a while but it was still raining and the odd thunder. Made it more fun though. After the trip down we did another rather quick trip down in the kayaks. Fun day!

Kayaking-Personal

Date: Thursday 2nd August
Location: Hurunui
Duration: 1 day
Group memebers: Jimmy Jarvie, James Sadler, Myself
Weather: Rain and cold
Flow: 180cumecs
Accidents/Incidents: Heading into the gorge (Maori gully) I had a swim. Got tipped getting pushed under a slightly undercut/overhanging rock, losing my paddle so couldn't roll . Lost the paddle, so had to walk up the steep bank out of the gorge onto the road, haul the kayak up the bank and walk it to the take out. Not ideal.

So we headed to the Hurunui thinking the 180cumec flow was gunna bring something exciting, but all that we got was a washed out, faster flowing river. It was very boily and lots of lateral waves, buffer waves off the rocks on the side of the river so not as fun as it gets at a lower flow. Boils got the better of me a times, rolling alot but the one time i happen to roll over and lose my paddle, it was as we headed into the gorge so my swim was not ideal. Made a very hard walk out but all went well with communication with Jimmy and James. Once i got onto the road we blew our whistles to locate where each other were. Met them at the take out and drove the 4wd motorbike (As our shuttle) to the truck at the put in. We got changed, drove back to the take-out, loaded the kayaks and headed home. Not the best of days but a good learning experience. Maybe i need to get a hand roll locked down!

Location: Hanmer Springs
Duration: 2 days
Weather: Drizzle then fine
Group members: Grey High Outdoor ed class
Supervisors: Myself and Wayne Cooper
Difficulty (grade): Intermediate
Accidents/Incidents: None

I was asked to go along to help out wtih Grey High Outdoor Ed class for their mountain biking trip in Hanmer. Wayne needed another helper/supervisor and a girl specifically to be a good role model for the girls in the class. We left Greymouth at 9am and got to Hanmer where we got ready to go for the first mountain bike ride. It wasn't the best weather on this day; Drizzling and cold but we still had heaps of fun. We had dinner after we'd arrived back then went to the hotpools. Next day we got up, cleaned the kitchen and our rooms and went for another mountain bike, this time a harder track but everyone did really well. We got back to the forest camp, had some lunch then went orienteering. I paired up with Charlotte so i could help her with her map reading. Had a really great time then it was time to head back to Greymouth where we arrived back at 7pm.

Kayaking- Personal

Date: Saturday 14th July
Location: Nine Mile Flood Run
Weather: Rain!
Group Members: Myself, Jimmy Jarvie and James Sadler
Grade: 3+-4
Flow: High
Accidents/Incidents: Jimmy hurt his ankle whilst going down the last slide. Hit the last ramp of the slide and nose dived rolling over and somehow sprained his ankle in the process. A stick and a paddle helped his walk out. :)

Awsome flood run! two sweet slides, the last being about 100m.

Kayaking Personal

Date:
Location: Hurunui
Weather: Fine and Sunny
Grade: 3
Flow: 40 cumecs
Group members: Myself, Jimmy Jarvie, James Sadler, Tom Slee
Accidents/Incidents: Tom had a swim but not a biggie. Car almost broke down on the way there in the middle of nowhere. But we got there in the end!

Awsome day on the Hurinui. Slow to get there because the car decided to blow its air condtitioning valve. (Not even too sure that's what it was) ha but we had to keep refilling the water every 5 mins. We managed to get it fixed and head to the river! Luckily. Put in at the grade 2 so we could warm up as Tom (who hadnt kayaked much at all) was coming down with us. He had a swim after pulling into an eddy and failing his roll twice and drank a bit of water so that was no good. We got out at the put-it of Maori Gully so we could walk to the car and drive it back to the take out. Then we had to walk all the way back to Maori Gully put in to kayak that section. The day was getting on around that time and getting pretty cold but the river was at a good flow and had heaps of fun. Wicked Day!

Location: Greymouth Civic Centre, Charlston
Duration: 4 days
Weather: Rain, one day fine.
Instructors: Myself, Jacob Schrama, Owen Ripley, Luke Wilson

Accidents/incidents: None

The week was mainly indoors at the gym because of the bad weather but didn't go too badly considering. We had a mix of clients all week from school kids to adults. One of the days we only had three clients which worked out quite well in the end in terms of teaching. We got to teach them the basics to lead climbing which was a bit different to the other days of just sticking to top-roping. Taught how to put on harnesses correctly, how to tie a figure of 8 knot, belaying and setting up and running an abseil. We only had one day outdoors at Charlston when the weather decided to be on our side. We only managed to get through abseiling though with no climbing because we ran out of time.

Had an awsome, eventful 4 days rafting down the Arnold River taking clients from all ages. We talked about fresh water mussels that are found in 3 destinations on the Arnold. The third spot we found on the last day which was really exciting. We also had an encounter with a stranded Brown Trout that had laid its fish eggs on some rocks. We freed it back into the river and got it all on video. Played fun games with the clients and had some good times jumping off the bank. Everybody enjoyed their individual day with us taking them rafting. Good times!

We were introduced to Trad climbing which started off as a pritty slow progression as we were were getting into learning how to place gear again. At the end of the week we were multi-pitching on grades 15-16. Stoked. Had a wicked time.

Raft-Tech

Date: 1st-5th April 2012
Location: Rangitata River
Group members: Chris H, Scott, Dan, Gretchen, Astro, Phil, Rata, Greg, Tui, Martijn, Jake, Sara, Owen.
Instructors: Koryn Gould, Reefton, Baz Goes.
River flow: 50-45 cumecs
River grade: 5
Duration of activity: 4 days
Weather conditions: Fine
Incidents/injuries: Coming down Rooster-Tail rapid, Reefton guiding our raft, hit the wrong line and got stuck surfing in a hole with me holding on to the outside line in between the raft and the hole.
The Rangitata was definatly a step up for us in terms off bigger volume. It doesn't require much more skills from a grade three river but requires alot more of using your voice, confidence and getting the right line. If not the consequence is alot more severe. That's where the difference between a grade 3 and grade 5 river comes in. It's really good that it has a gradual build up to the grade 5 section. We did alot of guiding, assisted flips, some rescue scenarios.

Rain had fallen that night so the flow was a bit high so the rapids were bigger. So had some good variation of flows over the trip and was a good re-cap over-all.

Kayak-Personal

Date: Sunday 5th Feb'
Location: Toaroha River
Weather: Humid, and warm
Duration: 2-3hrs
Group members: Greg lee, Rata, Phil P, Martijn, Luke, Sara, James Sadler, Jacob, Scott
Grade: 3
Type of river: Boulder gardens, boofs, technichal.
Flow: Low
Incidents: None

Had my best paddle on this river out of any of the other rivers i've paddled. We walked up our boats to the put-in which took 40mins. Never paddled this river before but felt really confident as five others had paddled it previously. First solid grade 3 in a while but after doing the first rapid i was quite confident. Had to scout about three of the bigger, technichal rapids. One which i was thinking about not doing as the others said they's portaged it more than once, but the flow seemed good and was a good run out if things went wrong but did it clean. No carnage, swims or any problems the whole trip which was sweet as we had 10 of us paddling. Wicked mission overall.

Kayak-Personal Hurinui, (Maori Gully)

Date: 15th January 2012
Location: Hurinui, (Maori Gully)
Duration: 1.5hrs
Group members: Nick Bishop, Martijn, Ben Searle
Grade: 3
Flow: 80 Cumecs
Incidents: None

We left Christchurch in great, sunny weather, got into the hurinui valley and the weather went southerly, cold and raining. So we had some problems with the kayaks on the roof with the wind which slowed the trip down as we were wanting to do more than one run. Got on the river quite late. Used my new mini mystic for the first time so that was a bit different but still a sweet trip.
